About the Event
This refuge, comprised of unique wetland systems and endangered longleaf pine forests, provides habitat for many threatened and endangered species. The Sandhill Cranes will also be stopping here on their southward fall migration.
We will be meeting at 9:00am in the parking lot area of the main Folkston entrance, specifically at 4159 Suwanee Canal Road, Folkston, GA 31537. Travel time is about 1 hour from St. Marys/Kingsland. There is usually a $5 entry fee to Okefenokee NWR, but this Saturday happens to be a fee free day.
We will take a scenic drive down the Wildlife Drive and stop at a few locations, before finishing with a walk down their boardwalk trail to the observation tower.
Our target species include Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, Sandhill Cranes, and Bachman's Sparrows!
Please plan to bring bug spray, sunscreen, and water. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
We hope to see you there!
