Christmas Bird Count 2025

Hello Camden County Birders!

This post serves as a call for volunteers. Come be a part of the nation’s longest running community science bird project! The Christmas Bird Count originally started in 1900 as a peaceful alternative to a bird hunting competition. This project involves volunteers that identify and count all birds all day within designated 15-mile diameter circles to help scientists understand and protect bird populations and their habitats.

The designated circle in our area comprises a large bit of Camden County. We will need plenty of volunteers to help cover all of the hotspots in this area! Some of the main locations in our circle include Crooked River State Park, Kings Bay Naval Base, Cumberland Harbour, and Ceylon WMA-South. If anyone has a boat, then counting in the Intracoastal Waterways in our circle would also be excellent. Cumberland Island is also a huge portion of our circle, however specific people have already been chosen for that area. If you live within the circle, then you may also choose to conduct the count from your own backyard!

This count involves identifying the birds you see, as well as counting them. No worries if you consider yourself a beginner though; birders of all skill sets are involved in the count! If you are a beginning birder, you can be paired with an "expert" initially.

Our count will be all day on Friday, December 19th. If you are interested in volunteering, or have any questions at all, please send an email to camdencountyaudubonsociety@gmail.com with “Christmas Bird Count” or “CBC” in the subject line, and include your name somewhere in the email. We will then add you to our volunteer interest form, and we will be sending out more detailed information soon via email. If you have any location preferences, please add that in your email as well.

Thank you all for your consideration!
